What is shot peening?


Shot Peening is mechanical cold metalworking process (i.e. in absence of heat).It is used to increase the compressive strength of a material.
In this process, metal surface is bombarded with high speed small balls called shots to create plastic deformation on the surface. So basically we are transferring energy to the grains on the surface. These grains, when absorb the energy, move towards the recrystallization stage where they transform to more smaller grains and larger grain boundaries. These longer grain boundaries act as a strong barrier against the propagation of defect along the surface grains. Thus it strengthens the material .
Due to this process, greater stress will be needed for the material to yield.

Blasting is the techniques of removing dust, coating, polishing of different surfaces. There are many types of blasting process available according to the requirement like shot peening blasting. It puts small dents on the surface to give a finish where required and helps in wear resistance of the surface.
